What are some unique ways to personalize our wedding and reception?

Question by ☼ lovethesun11: What are some unique ways to personalize our wedding and reception?
I know by choosing things that we like: music, food, flowers, decorations…..

I’m just trying to figure out some things that will make our wedding “us”. I mean like having a cake topper that looks like us, embroidering our last name initial on the table cloth that the cake sits on, etc.

Any ideas?
Thanks!

My sister in law & brother in law had a table with a scrapbook laying out. On the bride side there was a nice scrapbook full of the brides baby photoes all the way to till she met her husband. The same on the groom side. I thought this was nice & a wonderful way to personalize the wedding.

My cousin had a DVD made with photos of her & husband. It was playing on a screen during the reception. It too was like the scrapbooks with childhood photos and photos together. Plus it was playing “their song”.

I have inherited some 80-120 yr old (white) linen/cotton goods?

Question by cwstuffff: I have inherited some 80-120 yr old (white) linen/cotton goods?
Crocheted, tatted, laces, “table scarves”, “antimacassars”, etc.
Some are stained simply by being folded and stored for long times. Some have tea stains, etc.
Is there a gentle yet effective way of making these whiter now?
    Thanks.
(I believe my grandmother made many of these, so they’re precious to me now)

How lucky are you! If you can get any Shannon Lush written books [she is the Queen of Clean] I’m sure you will have the answer to a tee. Try online and at the library and book stores. She really is the ONLY one I would recommend to solve your dilemma. Good Luck.

I’m probably not the one to answer this question and will likely receive a lot of thumbs downs. But I’ll say it anyway. This seems like such a strange color combination for a baby shower I wouldn’t use it, but I realize it’s a matter of personal taste. ! If I had to do it, I would try to make it more of a tropical look. I would use white table cloths and I think I would alternate orange on one, turquoise on the next, etc. I might put just a touch of the other color on each table. I would use different shades of orange and different shades of turquoise, say one pale and one more saturated color. You may be able to find a floral fabric or geometric pattern in these colors, and you could incorporate that into your design scheme. I know you can find orange and turquoise candles. How about nesting them down into a clear glass bowl anchored with sand or white pebbles? You may be able to find some floating candles you could use in clear bowls, too.

I would keep the centerpieces very simple – maybe one pillar in a large vase or a hurricane vase, or a grouping of votives in different height clear glass containers. Set them on a mirror for added impact.
You could scatter a few colored glass stones around if you wish.

With this bold color duo, you want to make sure your flowers are bold and striking, not dainty or garden party looking, if you know what I mean. You might also use some tropical looking greenery as part of your decor.

I’ve done pink, blue, and yellow, and I have tons of ideas for those! But you’ll just have to look around and see what you can find. This color combo could be fun and playful, but I’d make sure it doesn’t become garish and jarring. It easily could, I think, so I’d keep it on the subtle side.

Why do some families make guests use the same dirty cloth napkins the used on the table the day before?

Question by : Why do some families make guests use the same dirty cloth napkins the used on the table the day before?
I spent a few days over at a friends house with her family. The first day we had dinner they gave a clean cloth napkin rolled into a ring. I used it and next day I found the very same napkin (dirty from the day before) rolled into its ring on my place at the table. My friend and her parents had their own used and dirty napkins too. Why don’t they wash them or give guests clean cloth napkins instead? I was of course embarrassed to ask but I found it a little disgusting…yet I had no option but to re-use my napking…

It is a custom in some countries to re-use dirty cloth napkings regardless of how dirty they are? What is the rationale behind this custom?

          Thanks!

Not a custom anywhere specifically, that I know of. But obviously a custom at their house. I can see using it again if it is still clean…perhaps…but dirty???

A dream I’d like some help interpreting?

Question by glackalackin: A dream I’d like some help interpreting?
I had a dream last night, that my dad and I were going to stay at a hotel. The hotel inside was sort of set up as a large hallway which all the rooms branched from. Numbers were on top of the door, denoting which room was which. I only remember it was extremely hard to find my room. The hallways were dingy and dark, but the room inside was big, open, and beautiful with only one window. My boyfriend was also staying at the hotel, and I looked outside the window to it snowing. So I texted him, and told him to meet me outside in the snow. There were a lot of other people there with us outside and the exit had some sort of porch above the door. I went back inside and it took me a long time to find my room again. After finally finding it, I went inside to greet my dad. We were in the main room with the window, and I looked outside to the snow again. My dog Sadie was outside. (In real life whenever my dog is in heat all of the family always worries about taking her for walks because we’re afraid a male dog will get a hold of her.) I saw another dog with her, which was a little rat terrier. I wanted to go outside and get them apart, but for some reason I couldn’t leave the room and I was stuck kicking myself. A little bit later, somehow my dog and the stray found their way into the room with my dad and I. The terrier seemed nice at first, but I noticed there was something weird about him. Then I found blood on the floor, and the terrier coincidentally disappeared. I wanted to get out and try to see my boyfriend or something but I felt trapped. I went into a different part of the room, and I saw my dad carry my dog and lay her on the table. As I walked closer I saw that her small body was covered in a mass of blood matted and flowing with her blood. Every inch of her trembling hurt body, even her head… and then I had a sinking feeling that the terrier had done it, and I knew he was still in the room somewhere hiding. My dad retrieved a white cloth and laid it on top of her, to try and either cover her or stop the bleeding, but the blood continued to seep through from her helpless body into the white cloth… and then I woke up.

Your boyfriend was there, at the hotel with you. Opportunity.
After realizing that, you looked out into the unknown and saw pure white. Innocence.
You used the impersonal method of a text message to ask him to join you. Reservation.
Once outside you saw there were people standing around; an audience. Embarrassment.
You went back to the safety of the hotel, but couldn’t find your room. A chance to go back outside?
But you returned to your room, where your father was. Safe at home, untouched. Still a good girl.
You looked back outside. What was out there? What had you missed out on? Regretting not going through with it.
It’s no coincidence that Sadie found a boyfriend of her own in your dream, out there in the whiteness.
You tried to get her back inside in time, like yourself, but Sadie was not a good girl like you.
Her terrier boyfriend had seemed like a nice boy, but the blood proved what they had done.
Your father, the protector of all good girls, placed a cloth on Sadie to cover up the blood.
A white cloth. Pure white. Virginal. But there was no hiding what Sadie had done out there.
The blood from the sex she had with her boyfriend could not be hidden.
The blood that came from her going outside the safety of the home.
Out where you had been with your boyfriend, before you felt it would be wrong and came inside.

Do you understand your dream better now?

Question by Osama Dick Laden: Why do some people kind of cover their mouths when sitting next to me?
Like in maths this one dude kind of sits how you would if you were resting your chin on your hand with your elbow on the table. I’m totally worried I smell or something, but it’s not like he’s covering his nose and he doesn’t always sit like this. We don’t really feel comfortable sitting next to eachother, I can say that much. Any ideas why? When I used to do this it was when I was worried I had bad breath so idk? It just bothers me.

              Two thing:

1- Some people are not confortable sitting too close to any body – you fall within his Comfort Zone.

2- Try sneeking to him while he is on Physics class while sitting next to another person, Does he do the same thing?

If NO, then you need to look at yourself as he might be sending you a message !

Now it left a mark and I can’t get it off with water. What should I use to get it off? If I try to scrape it off it also took away the wood.

Refinish the table top. You took off the finish. Now you have to put a new one on.

Question by ɐɔıssǝɾ: do you have some suggenstions for my wedding center pieces?
Our date is set for 11/11/11. I want to do 3 Ivory candles of different sizes in the center of the table with autumn leaves all around them.

Where I need help is what to put the candles on? Any suggestions? I’m thinking a clear plate of some sort or even a birch stump to give it height.

Would 3 additional votive bee too much? There will not be a sit down dinner, just butler passed hour derv’s.

My thought is now to have black table linens, if that helps.

Thanks so much, I thought I would have this figured out by now since I worked wedding banquets for so long.

We went to a local thrift store & stocked up on clear glass plates for like .25 cents each. That’s what we put our candles on. You can find some nice dishes there for SUPER cheap. Then to make up for the plain look of the glass, decorate around it like you thought of. Congrats.
