How can you brighten up a dark room? (please read details for more info.)?

Question by Largo: How can you brighten up a dark room? (please read details for more info.)?
I am a tad bit in over my head. I posted in the decorating forum a day ago. But I still need a bit of help. We live in an apartment. Standard white walls (scratched and dinged up by the former owners), beige carpet (yick), white kitchen tile (I could spend all weekend cleaning the floor, but it still looks dirty), pink/tan kitchen counters (double yick) , two windows, and there is a giant tree blocking the window in the living room. Needless to say, the whole apartment is DARK. It is just so depressing. We don’t have much on the walls at the moment, but I did buy two bright and colorful paintings. But the place desperately needs a makeover. We have an old, dark brown cloth, hand-me-down couch that we cant afford to get rid of and a recliner to match, (AND my husband doesn’t want to get rid of it. It was his grandparent’s the couch and recliner set) a couple matching tile end-tables, (that we bought from an estate sale), and a black wrought-iron coffee table with a glass top (that we picked up on trash day. Its actually really nice. Not sure why anyone would toss it.) So, I need ideas to help brighten the place up. I dread going home at night because I hate that no natural light can come in, and when we do turn on a light, it just accentuates how empty the place looks. I need ideas! (I’m new at this. This is our first apartment, and I want to make it look nice.) What colors are in now for window treatments? How can I brighten up this gross kitchen? Cover up the tile? What else can I put on the walls? Lighting ideas? Ways to cover up this gross-a$$ couch and recliner? Just give me any ideas you can. Any other apartment dwellers feel my pain? Thanks! Much appreciated.

I want to paint my dining room table, what do I need to do?

Question by Pollyanna: I want to paint my dining room table, what do I need to do?
I love the shabby chic style, and am going for a white dining room table. It’s like any other table, it’s natural not pressed wood, and has a glossy finish. Can I use some of that new spray paint that “sticks” to everything, I’ve used it on rocking chairs and it’s great. I don’t won’t to sand the entire table, it will take forever. Any suggestions?

Please click on the link. Then on the main page click take a tour. Then click on Rennisance Room.

That is our room. I’m nervous because it looks a bit plain and HUGE for our wedding. This room holds 250 and our wedding will be 100 or less people.

Would you use those linens? Would you put the head table at the side or at the window?

      My colours are dark purple.

      Thanks

I had just finished canning green beans. I placed the hot jars of beans directly from the stove onto a towel on my dining room table. The next day, I noticed dark rings underneath the towel, in the finish of the table. Can I get them out?

This is probably going to require a sand and re-stain of your table.

Question by NICHOL A: What do I use on the top of my freshly painted dining room table to avoid water marks from glasses, ect….?
I just painted my wood dining room table black. First I cleaned it, then I used 0000 steel wool, then I used a tack cloth, then I primed with rust-oleum painters touch gray primer/latex, then I used rust-oleum painters touch multi-purpose latex pain – gloss black, now I’m wondering if I did the right steps….and if so….do I need a top coat to prevent water stains from glasses, etc…? We use this table daily with children and family. Any advice would be appreciated as I’ve never done this before…..thanks!!

Finish it with a coat of gloss oil varethane. Latex is water-based and will make rings of its own from the water glasses. But a coat or 2 of oil varethane will seal it beautifully.

I’ve seen it before and it had little people surgeons and a little person laying on the operating table. I am talking about the late 80′s early 90′s version of the fisher price little people.

How to turn dining room into fancy restaurant for Valentine’s Day?

Question by ASTEROID: How to turn dining room into fancy restaurant for Valentine’s Day?
I hate restaurants on or around Valentine’s Day, especially after the awkward experience my wife and I had two years ago. Sat, Feb 12th, my little brother, nephew and nieces (5,6,8,8) are going to run a restaurant in my dining room and kitchen, which they’re crazily excited about. It’s also a surprise to my wife.

How do I convert an 18ft x 12ft dining room into a restaurant. I got tables, table cloths, candles, a few other necessities. I have white Christmas lights that I’m going to drape in front of the two large windows outside. But what are some good ideas for lighting, atmosphere, etc? Main access to the dining room is through the car port.

I also want a few other couples over, like bro-in-law and his wife, close friends. It’ll keep the kids busy, and give it more of that restaurant vibe, rather than a nice dinner at home… served by little ones.

Food’s covered. I’m cooking everything beforehand and the kids will be able to operate out of the kitchen.
Disposable (but nice) dinnerware, cleanup will be fast.
Kids will have a blast and will be paid for their work, of course.

                    Your creative ideas are appreciated!

You could send an invitation by mail, leave it on your wife’s pillow, send it with a bouquet of flowers, leave it on the dash of your wife’s car, etc. Your invitation needs to be specific as to when the romantic dinner is planned. Be creative!

Sprinkle the table with rose petals or sparkly heart shaped sprinkles. You can set floating candles in small glasses filled partly with cranberry juice. Play soft background music. You can get helium balloons as decoration for the room. Don’t forget flowers. You could put a single red rose in a vase on each table. Champagne (if you drink), strawberries or could go so far as chocolate dipped strawberries as the kids would love those too. Have a trail of rose petals from the entrance to the table where she’ll be sitting. You could scatter Hershey’s kisses on the table. Cut large paper hearts from construction paper and write messages like “Be Mine”, “My Love”, “Your Sweet” etc. Hang the hearts from the ceiling using yarn, string or streamers.

Can’t think of much more. Hope this helps
