For oils, should I buy linen and jute streched canvasses and then do the following before painting?

Question by Anybody: For oils, should I buy linen and jute streched canvasses and then do the following before painting?
Apply two coats of gesso, then glue (I don’t know what kind), then size it (what does this mean?) and then a coating of grey or beige paint as a base?

    Best answer:

    Answer by joyfulpaints
“Sizing”, which is traditionally rabbit-skin glue, goes on the linen or canvas BEFORE the gesso. It seals the fabric so the oil does not soak into it, and shrinks it tight onto the stretcher. Glue and sizing are the same thing. (You have to cook rabbit skin glue before applying it… and sometimes it doesn’t cook properly!)

You can skip this process by purchasing pre-gessoed canvases or panels – they’re perfectly fine. The paint can be applied directly onto the gesso.

It’s your choice whether or not to use a tinted base coat of paint, some artists do and some don’t. Often this base coat will show through the finished work or give an overall colour that shows through glazes, depending on the style of painting. Some artists just block in their image with thinned oils to give them a idea of composition.

Warhammer 40k Painting Tutorial – Orks with (mostly) washes

**MORE INFO AND INSTRUCTIONS HERE, PLEASE READ** The idea of this tutorial is to get good tabletop-quality models out on the table in less than afternoon or evening without worrying too much about really fine details and complex highlighting techniques. This is NOT a shortcut to display-quality or golden daemon standards and is aimed more at those of you who want something decent to put on the board but probably don’t like investing time into painting as much, or play Imperial Guard, Orks, Tyranids or any other high model count army. Hopefully this should inspire you to get them painted! Credit to this thread on Warseer: www.warseer.com You’ll need the following: – Paints* – Devlan Mud – Badab Black – Thraka Green – Leviathan Purple – Boltgun Metal – Mithril Silver – Blood Red – Skull White – Chaos Black – White undercoat *You can use alternatives if you can find them, this is what I had at hand! – Tools – Wash brush or equivalent – Standard brush – Drybrush or equivalent – Optional stuff for the basing part at the end – Bubonic Brown – Bestial Brown, for the base rim, though this can be any colour of your choice – Epoxy / Gap Filler – I used No More Nails, similar stuff like Polyfilla will do – Sculpting Knife ‘ERE WE GO 1. 0:40 Undercoat the model white, preferably with a spray of some sort. This will provide highlighting for the washes, any other colour might obscure them. I’m assuming in the video that this is already done, as some can take up to 24 hours to cure. 2

Question by c_patching: How does one go about painting a table with a laminate top?
I have a dining room table that is in dire need of a new coat of paint, but it has what I believe to be a laminate top. Do I need to (or can I even )pry that up? Or can I sand it and paint over it?

        Best answer:

        Answer by E Y
You need to sand it with a fine sand paper and then prime it. It will then be ready for paint.

PAINTING FABRIC BY HALL GROAT II – INSTRUCTIONAL DVD TRAILER

In Painting Fabric Hall introduces several classical approaches for realizing the dynamic form of fabric, through painting elegant sections of white, red and blue cloth. Included within the two-hour DVD are stunning close-up shots of Hall’s classical brushwork, color mixing techniques, in addition to views of his studio as he discusses his paintings at various stages. Through his innovative, step-by-step approach, he outlines the processes that were used by such traditional 19th century painters as Edgar Degas and Edouard Manet. Using a clear and concise teaching approach, Hall reveals the secrets behind creating brilliant paintings of cloth, covering such topics as observing the basic shapes, painting the foundation forms, modeling the fabric folds, contrasting warm and cool colors, and dark and light values. Hall has taught art for over twenty years, and currently is an Professor of Art at a college in New York. ARTNews Magazine critic, Gerard Haggerty, states that Hall Groat II’s still life paintings evoke the big picture that we call art history, including painters like Jean-Baptiste-Siméon Chardin, Edwin Dickinson, and his teacher Lennart Anderson.” Collectors of his work have expressed that the work is “Alive, full of grace vitality and beauty, capturing light that is sublime in nature.”

Question by peter_jochems_nl: Is wood-glue good for glueing painting linen on wood?
I am a painter and I like to glue linen on wood to paint on. Is it a good method to glue linen on wood? I want my paintings to be preserved properly in the long run, can the glue damage the painted surface for some reason? What do you think of this method? I like to paint small paintings and I like the hard surface the wood provides this way.
