Question by Anybody: For oils, should I buy linen and jute streched canvasses and then do the following before painting?
Apply two coats of gesso, then glue (I don’t know what kind), then size it (what does this mean?) and then a coating of grey or beige paint as a base?

Answer by joyfulpaints “Sizing”, which is traditionally rabbit-skin glue, goes on the linen or canvas BEFORE the gesso. It seals the fabric so the oil does not soak into it, and shrinks it tight onto the stretcher. Glue and sizing are the same thing. (You have to cook rabbit skin glue before applying it… and sometimes it doesn’t cook properly!)
You can skip this process by purchasing pre-gessoed canvases or panels – they’re perfectly fine. The paint can be applied directly onto the gesso.
It’s your choice whether or not to use a tinted base coat of paint, some artists do and some don’t. Often this base coat will show through the finished work or give an overall colour that shows through glazes, depending on the style of painting. Some artists just block in their image with thinned oils to give them a idea of composition.

Question by c_patching: How does one go about painting a table with a laminate top?
I have a dining room table that is in dire need of a new coat of paint, but it has what I believe to be a laminate top. Do I need to (or can I even )pry that up? Or can I sand it and paint over it?

Answer by E Y You need to sand it with a fine sand paper and then prime it. It will then be ready for paint.

i was searching the web for a picture of something totally unrelated, and came across this painting. i dont have the link i just assumed it was by hieronymus bosch based on the style. now im trying to find the name i dont have the original url for the painting, i can try to describe it. in the center of it is a building of some sort on fire. in the upper right is a grassless hill w/ trees w/ broken wheels on them and a man about to be beheaded by a skeleton. the lower right show what appears to be a battle w/ an army of skeletons marching behind large tower shields there is a man drawing a sword by a table w/ a white table cloth. in the background in the upper left is a hill w/ black smoke and a red sky coming out from it. the lower left has a king wearing plate armor is laying on his back w/ a skeletal figure behind him, he is next to some barrels of gold and silver with a skeletal figure in armor clamoring for the loot

I am a painter and I like to glue linen on wood to paint on. Is it a good method to glue linen on wood? I want my paintings to be preserved properly in the long run, can the glue damage the painted surface for some reason? What do you think of this method? I like to paint small paintings and I like the hard surface the wood provides this way.
