Question by cala: Hand embroidering on an Irish linen handkerchief – tips?
I am hand embroidering monograms on some vintage Irish linen handkerchiefs and I made a mess of the first one. The fabric is so delicate it is pulling the threads together and leaving gaps at the edges of the design. I have switched to a smaller needle and finer thread, but should I use a stabilizer? And if so, what kind? Thanks for your help
Yes I am working in a hoop and yes I am doing this by hand. Yes I know how to embroider and tat, but I like the tiny rolled hems on these just like they are. I have embroidered cotton handkerchiefs in the past, I just never tried linen.
Best answer:
Answer by riversconfluence You were right to use a very fine needle, and I might use only one thread of floss.
You could use paper for a stabilizer. I just used typing paper the one time I had to do that. It worked on the sheer fairy wing for Barbie.
Do you have a embroidery frame that has thumb screws to make it tight? Use that, and without stretching the material, but with holding it firm, that might help a little. And make sure the material is still taught with every stitch. And perhaps using a small frame will be helpful to you.
I have in the past put more material, and even tape in an embroidery frame to keep the material taut.
Wow, you are brave, I looked at a linen hanky once with the thought of embroidering it, saw the flimsy material, and ended the thought right there.
Do you tat or crochet? Can you put a lace edge on the hanky?
As promised, my “before organization” bathroom tour. I did NOT clean up AT ALL before filming this, so please excuse the messiness. WARNING: This is a long video, I know, and I do apologize. Please bear with me as I am learning how to do this whole YouTube thing as I go. Hopefully my future videos will be more concise. Stay tuned for Part 3 where I show what new items I picked out to help me with this project. I bought those brown glass canisters on my counter several years ago from Restoration Hardware, but they no longer carry them – www.restorationhardware.com I purchased my Simple Human trash cans from the Container Store – www.containerstore.com Pottery Barn no longer carries the wall-mounted cabinet I show in my toilet room – www.potterybarn.com The laundry basket is from the Container Store – www.containerstore.com The brown bins (called Tribeca bins) are from the Container Store as well, but they no longer carry the size I have in my linen closet – www.containerstore.com The DIY drawer divider system is from a company called Lifestyle Systems – www.lifestylesystems.com Video Rating: 4 / 5
